What the Toast lawsuit is about
On October 29, 2026, the Federal Trade Commission and state partners filed a lawsuit against Toast Inc. and affiliated entities. The complaint concerns Toast’s practices with restaurant customers, alleging undisclosed charges, unwanted subscription add-ons, obstacles to cancellation, and failures to deliver promised customer support. FTC announcement and complaint.
For a business owner, those issues raise practical questions: Do you understand every charge on your bill? Are you paying for features you use? Can you get help during your busiest hours? What would it cost to leave?
A processing comparison can help you answer those questions and decide whether another setup makes more sense.
Compare the whole bill before choosing a new processor
A lower advertised rate is only one part of the decision. The comparison should account for what you pay to accept payments and operate the tools around them.
Ask for a proposal that separates:
- Processing charges: percentage rates, per-transaction charges, and differences between in-person and online payments.
- Software and add-ons: POS subscriptions, ordering tools, loyalty programs, reporting, and other features you need.
- Equipment and setup: terminals, handhelds, installation, leases, financing, and replacement costs.
- Ongoing terms: monthly charges, support, settlement timing, contract length, and cancellation conditions.
Use the same transaction volume, average sale, and payment mix when comparing proposals. Then distinguish recurring costs from the one-time expense of changing systems. That gives you a clearer picture of what a switch could mean for your business.
Switching from Toast may mean changing your POS, too
Toast states that its POS requires Toast Payments. Moving to a different processor can therefore involve a broader system change. Toast’s explanation of its payment processing model.
Before choosing an alternative, confirm which equipment and integrations it supports. Map out how you will handle menus or inventory, gift cards, loyalty accounts, refunds, reporting, and staff training. Verify what can transfer and what needs to be rebuilt.
Review your current agreement and any equipment or financing arrangements as part of that plan. Ask for written confirmation of notice requirements, renewal dates, cancellation costs, and any balances affected by a change.
The right fit depends on how your business runs
Toast serves restaurant and retail businesses. Toast company overview. PMF LA’s comparison offer is open to any business using Toast that wants to explore other processing options.
Your priorities might include:
- Restaurants and bars: tableside payments, split checks, tipping, kitchen communication, and support during service.
- Cafés, bakeries, and quick-service businesses: fast checkout, online orders, repeat-customer tools, and reliable performance during rushes.
- Retail stores and markets: inventory, barcode scanning, returns, online sales, and reporting across locations.
Start with the functions your team relies on. A proposal is more useful when it shows how those needs will be met, who will support them, and what they will cost.
How PMF LA helps you compare
PMF LA works with multiple processors and offers in-house processing. That lets us explore different options based on your business rather than begin with a single predetermined provider.
We start by discussing your current setup and what you want to improve. From there, we help compare available options across pricing, features, equipment, support, and contract terms. If you decide to move forward, we help you work through the setup requirements for the selected provider.
Start by telling us what you want to improve—unexpected charges, support delays, checkout problems, or simply uncertainty about whether your current arrangement is competitive. For a closer comparison, we can then review three recent processing statements, your agreement, and the features you need to keep.
You do not need to have your next processor picked out before starting the conversation. Helping you compare is the point.
If you are coming from Toast, ask us about a switching deal. We can review available offers that waive switching costs and explain what is covered in your proposal, alongside the new provider’s ongoing pricing and terms.
